LIBERAL is Not A Dirty Word!
Regardless of what certain vice presidential candidates or Republican elected officials might be saying these days about "liberals" and other such nonsense about some sort of imagined "real" Americans as opposed to other "liberals" we know that America's strength is her diversity. We know that there are good and bad liberals just as there are good and bad conservatives. It's time that we put an end to this hateful, divisive, mean-spirited rhetoric and so we again turn to OldAmericanCentury.org.
"Liberal spotted. Don't let them out of your sight." The Brownshirt reminds me of Rolph in "The Sound of Music". Perhaps you remember the frightening scene as the Von Trapp's were hiding in the monastery and Christopher Plummer as Captain Von Trapp says to the boy, "Rolph, you're not like them. You're not one of them. Come away with us" ...at which point Rolph blows his whistle "Lieutenant!! Lieutenant!!" and the Von Trapps run for their lives.
Let's hope that the results of November 4th will be like us blowing a whistle and sending a strong message to each other and to the entire world.

Bored With Our School Board....Darn Important....and Usually Neglected
Eric Hartley encourages to you think real hard about your vote for the county school board on November 4th and suggests that maybe they should all get an across-the-board "no". Some of them will serve terms lasting until 2013, according to Hartley. In case you think our school's management is important but have not given much thought to your vote on this matter, you will want to read his column at: Hartley

City's Draft Comprehensive Plan Available For Your Review
There are those who would cynically say that these plans have little meaning or import, that they will be shelved or ignored, that once elected officials get a hold of them it's anybody's guess as to what will get funding or support, etc., etc. CP could not possibly comment on such assumptions...could I? Of course, if one were to do some "backcasting" and take a look at previous such plans and then see what happened and what did not happen, one could develop a framework to make such an argument, but who is going to do that? (Oh yeah--that would be like the National Enquirer pulling up their old predictions to see which ones came true...)
On the other hand, it would be hard to believe that the environmental, transportation, over-development mess we are in was actually planned. Just take a look at the Aris T Allen Boulevard intersection/turnoff with Riva Road or the Hilltop Lane/Forest Drive or the Forest Drive/Chinquapin Rd. intersection...or...well, you get the point...
Find it here: annapolis comp plan. Your comments about the draft will be taken by city officials....and CP if you'd like.

Public Transit/Public Television and Why We Need Both
See the PBS video "Driven to Despair" that documents how the sprawling "exurbs" coupled with high fuel prices, gas guzzler autos, highways, long commutes, falling home prices and now the mortgage crisis have all come together as a sort of perfect storm that spells serious if not catastrophic trouble for many Americans. CP has long advocated for more public transit and decried the automobile crazed culture that has wrought destruction of our landscape as we sprawl toward economic and environmental disaster. This documentary says it all and shows it all in such a compelling manner that I put it on the do-not-miss list. SO DO NOT MISS IT or the other companion videos "An Exhausting Commute" and "Reinventing American Transportation". You have been warned! See: Driven to Despair

How Race Enters the Presidential Campaign Again
Perhaps you are aware that George Will and Rush Limbaugh have made comments about the Colin Powell endorsement of Obama. They think that race played a factor, to put it mildly...and they are unhappy.
Extremist right wing attack dogs such as Will and Limbaugh, who are pretty much white supremacists as far as I can tell, love Blacks only when and if they are conservative Republicans. Even Powell used to be their boy, but not anymore. They cannot possibly imagine that he would have endorsed Obama, so therefore.....it must be racially motivated!!! Powell, their great white hope, has lost his luster! Clarence Thomas and Alan Keyes are just not enough in their playbook. They still love their Michael Steele, who spoke in front of thousands of delegates at the GOP Convention, including all of the 32 Black delegates but for Powell to break ranks....ooohh.....that hurts. And so they had to react. Yep-racism. Ooohhh.
Supremacists of all shapes and colors get where they are, stay where they are and justify where they are by divisiveness, intolerance, hatred and fearmongering, yet as soon as their power circle begins to fall apart, they start talking about fairness, equality and tolerance. In other words, racism has been just fine with Limbaugh and Will since forever, but now that Obama is on the verge of becoming president and Powell endorses him, suddenly that's racist! The real supremacists have always loved racism when it works in their favor, and the second that the oppressed demand their rights and more power, they call them racist and separatists. The second they actually start gaining more power and rights they claim they only got them because of White, liberal guilt or because of--get this--reverse racism. Then they try to warn other Whites that unless they stop them, they are doomed. It's always been that way. (Is that not happening with Sarah Palin where they crowds she fires up say "Kill Obama"???..and she says nothing.)
Some Whites think that racism ended when the civil rights movement resulted in laws supposedly guaranteeing equality. "They got what they wanted. We gave it to them." they like to say. "What are they complaining about now?"
A few weeks ago, a Gay man I know, a political activist who made a big deal out of becoming a Republican, was subjected to a smear campaign at another Republican blog because of his sexual identity. A plethora of anonymous hate emails said he could not be Gay and a Republican and other such stuff. That same man, himself the subject of prejudice and intolerance, actually said to me that now that a Black man is a Democratic presidential candidate, how can Blacks say there is still racism?
Since Limbaugh and Will cannot possibly fathom why the highly respected general and former secretary of state would endorse the Black man Obama instead of the military man McCain, they had to basically say he did it because he's Black, er, I mean because they are both Black--and that's racist!!!
Shoe. Other foot.
Pot. Kettle.....Black.
See the pompous, stuffshirt, patrician George Will discuss the "whole Al Sharpton-Jesse Jackson game of political rhetoric" below:

Unburdening Bob Burdon
CP received an anonymous letter from a disgruntled Chamber of Commerce member in response to the piece I published recently about the chamber's President Bob Burden. If you are that writer, please tell me more because your letter is interesting but needs elaboration. Please contact me. If you wish to remain anonymous, I will respect your wish, although this is still a free country--and your freedom of speech is still guaranteed--or so I believe. Thank you.
UPDATE: Oct 21 I am continuing to investigate this story and the anonymous writer has been in direct contact with me. I have asked Mr Burdon and Chamber Board Chair Larry Ulvila to respond. If you are familiar with the Chamber of Commerce and can add to this developing story, please contact me at paul@foerfront.com.

Here something for you to quickly dismiss, the libera; bias of the press.

Dear Anonymous (What are you afraid of this time?)
I assuming that you're trying to pigeonhole me again but you must not have read all the posts where I also critique media coverage. While some liberals might quickly dismiss this issue as you contend, I take a more objective approach. As the holder of an MA in journalism who has conducted scholarly research and taught about media bias, I am no stranger to this debate but it is wrong of you to assume somehow that I would quickly or otherwise dismiss what you call "the libera; (sic) bias of the press.
1. I already read this article and another one about it on page 2 no less, of the Washington Post no less.
2. The fact that it has already been picked up in so many media outlets would suggest a few things as well--would it not? Has that occurred to you?
3.And read this from The Sun: "Although the authors said some observers would use the findings to argue that the major media have a pro-Obama bias, they said their data did not provide conclusive answers." I suggest you read that again. No conclusive answers.
It is not so easy to methodologize and operationalize research to code and detect bias in media coverage. Such research has inherent flaws and contradictions. Some organizations and individuals such as Norman Solomon's FAIR, Noam Chomsky (ughh!) and Ben Bagdikian (whom I have met and whose book "The Media Monopoly" I have read) believe the media tend to have a centrist or conservative bias while Allan Lichtenberg, the late Reed Irvine of Accuracy in Media and others believe the opposite.
Take news coverage of the Israeli-Arab controversy, a topic I have studied for decades. My views on this might lead pro-Arab groups might call me a Zionist, colonialist pig but I have even been booed at in synagogue by some very uptight and paranoid co-religionists when I suggested that media say bad things about Israeli policies because they are often true. So, feel comfortable pigeonholing me--or all liberals-- all you wish. But, it does not make your right. I guess it depends on one's own bent. All media are biased in some way and operate within a complex field of social forces that make objectivity nothing more than an elusive goal for which some strive more than others. There are plenty of conservative publications and media outlets to keep conservatives happy.
At least the authors of that report and the authors of news articles about it have bylines. Why do you remain anonymous? And if you so dislike what I write, why do you keep writing to me? Of course, if you wish to exercise some subtle and careful analysis of your own (we're all waiting) go ahead and speak up...but please include your name.
One thing you can always count on is that Capital Punishment is always independent--believe me or not, like what I say or not, you always know where I stand...and unlike you Mr or Ms Anonymous, you know who I am.
