Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon...Thank Goodness Our Mayor is Beyond Reproach

At least in her own head.....If big city mayors can get in trouble, so can small city mayors.. While incompetence, and nastiness are not crimes and dereliction of duties may or may not be actionable, and perhaps hiring a disbarred city attorney who gave money to your campaign funds may not be criminal, what about hiring cronies at taxpayer expense to do your own political bidding for legislation before the deliberative body you chair???

How Our Daily Newspaper is Becoming More Like A Tabloid; Who Ya Gonna Call???

Call ghostbusters. Yep. A story about ghosts captured on film with the photographs in the local paper. Is it "ectoplasm?" They can't be serious--can they? An image of a ghost was captured among the tombstones at St. Anne's Church? You can't see 'em but they show up on film. Looks like cigarette smoke to me. Maybe we can get some tobacco settlement money and investigate. Now about this ectoplasm--is there a scientific way to determine if it's really there...or not? Or is this beyond science? Can we get these ghosts to fly around downtown and feed parking meters, find open parking spaces or maybe even serve up crab cakes in the market house? Now that's the place we ought to be looking for ghosts--of tenants who mysteriously disappeared. Find it in our local newspaper, er tabloid at Ghostbusters .

The Race For Mayor.....and they're off....or at least one is

...And that one would be Trudy McFall who last night officially announced her intention to be the next mayor before a jubilant crowd of 50 to 75 (it's a guess...I did not count) people at Harry Browns on State Circle. Okay, I know. I wanted to forget about this campaign until the summer but with McFall's fundraising and now this kickoff party--it's happening now. More and more, talk of the town is she is the one to beat. It's too early for that...waaay too early. She's certainly the one to out-fundraise and out-organize for the moment. Annapolitans are talking more about who is running--how we can use this year to shape an agenda and vision and I am all for that. Also the subject of chatter--what a relief it's going to be to have a new mayor. I'll drink to that.

Last night McFall was introduced by campaign manager Dennis Conti and she praised him, reminding the audience that it was he who ran the successful campaigns of both County Councilman Josh Cohen and Alderman Ross Arnett. Cohen, who is considering entering the race, and ever the pleasant and savvy politician--and as always publicly keeping his options open--was in the audience and McFall welcomed him. --a topic we will take up in another post--so his appearance is all the more interesting. I take it as a signal that he remains undecided.....On the other hand, he may simply be signaling that he is always the loyal Democrat. However, if Cohen really wants to play it safe, he should remain on County Council. On a similar note, I did not see a single alderman or other elected official in the crowd, which brings me to the next issue...who else is in the race?

Let's first look at the Aldermen and Alderwomen:
Classie Hoyle, maybe
Sheila Finlayson, highly likely
Dick Israel, highly likely
Fred Paone, highly unlikely
Ross Arnett, highly unlikely
Sam Shropshire, maybe, likely, unlikely, perhaps, ask him later
Julie Stankivic, highly unlikely
Dave Cordle, his hat is in the ring
Mayor Ellen O. Moyer, only if she can pull a Bloomberg...don't laugh too hard....

And among others:
Frank Flyntz, R, has a website but no recent updates and had a fundraiser months ago
Chris Fox, R, has a website...and greatly enhanced recently
Zina Pierre, D, I think she's in the race...
Chuck Weikel, D, it's anybody's guess
Herb McMillan, R, maybe???
Louise Beauregard ?????? (inside joke)
Josh Cohen, see above
Have I missed anyone?

A couple items of interest in McFall's brief presentation:
She reminded us of her managerial and financial experience--she will likely repeat that...again...and again
She mentioned the Market House--let's address it early in the next administration and not wait for the courts
Never the less, she will hire an experienced, professional chief administrative office whether that will be a city administrator or a city manager as the result of a new charter amendment..McFall has made a fairly strong and determined movement toward supporting the city manager issue.
She does not seek higher office beyond mayor. If elected, she plans to travel or enjoy a beach after serving her term. (Our current mayor took 6 weeks while serving as mayor to go to Europe...remember that?)
She feels that the seriousness of crime has been somewhat lessened due to changes wrought by the new chief.

In a subsequent post, I'll lay down some ground rules about how I'll be covering this election.....but one thing is for sure.....after last night's kickoff for McFall, the race is on....and the elections are now less than  year away.

Shovel Ready- Stimuli...the kind of change we can believe in...I am stimulated...I am stimulated...

This just in thanks to Eastport resident Chris LeDoux who has directed me to what our fair city is likely to submit for the grand Obama stimulus package (data from the National Conference of Mayors mainstreeteconomicrecovery ):

Project DescriptionFunding RequiredJobs

environmental impact programs 1,400,000 3

annapolis e z...a funding program for residents to reduce their carbon footprints and training programs to meet new green technologies 2,650,000 25

911 technology 560,000 2

addition of emergency operation center at police headquarters 8,000,000 6

undergrounding of utility lines in the historic district 11,000,000 11

sidewalk improvement along all city streets-annual demand 1,000,000 4

add new trolley system fromcounty shopping areas to center of historic city 1,700,000 6

expand bus maintence capacity 750,000 10

nutrient reduction program 329,000 4

Annapolis MDWater2 wells and 80 year old waterplant reconstruction 23,000,000 18
Totals:$79,089,000.00141.00

Gosh I am not sure where to begin but if we can get a chunk of that $79 million and change, that is the kind of change of change we can believe in. That's almost equivalent to our annual operating budget. The $23 million for water plant construction really concerns me--that's our water we're talking about! We need $23 million? If we don't get it, will that mean bonds and more bonds??? The transit guru in me is pleased to see the passenger terminal up for consideration...but where???? Trolleys from shopping areas to downtown???? I dunno 'bout dat. C'mon--we already have frequent bus service. Let's get local merchants to pitch in for upgrades. I'd rather see city-county cooperation before we buy vehicles. Maybe it can be applied to the mayor's dream of funding the 921 route...But hey--I'm open to ideas..The money for bus maintenance expansion is bogus as far as I can tell. We now have 4 garage bays for repairing a fleet of less than 25 vehicles. Where is there capacity lacking? I think what they need is better management. The $8 million for the police station and $13 million for the recreation center interest me as well. I thought this was for "shovel ready" projects. These projects have already broken ground--the police station retro is nearing completion. That must mean they have been funded--probably with state and federal dollars and bonds to one extent or another. Does this mean we're just looking for some payback--or what?...
Perhaps now we are all from Romulac...a province in France..I am stimulated...I am stimulated. For those of you who missed the funniest episodes of Saturday Night Live.....too bad (astronauts on the moon?? Ha ha ha).

Breaking News!!! Dillon's Bus Company Will Continue 921 Bus Service

This just in.....CP has learned that Dillon's Bus Company, a contractor with the MTA, will continue operating the 921 bus route linking Annapolis and METRO at New Carrollton without any disruption in service. The route had been scheduled to stop service next week due to state budget cuts. CP has confirmed with Dillons that it intends to maintain the route, schedule and fares for now. Thanks to alert reader Charles Owen for helping CP to be the first media outlet to announce this news.

Rapid and Effective Police Response

CP recently witnessed an altercation and notified police by a 911 telephone call. The 911 center answered after one ring, quickly connected me to Annapolis City Police, and the operator stayed on the line as she communicated to the officers in patrol cars. The dispatcher asked all the right questions, asked if I was in danger or if there were weapons on the scene etc. (The only weapon we noticed was the foul mouth of the nasty "lady".) Two police cars arrived within minutes, and I was outta' there. I have favorably commented before about how fast our police arrive when there is an emergency. It is the "lower-level" and community policing and crime prevention challenges that I think still need much improvement. However, there are signs that this is happening under the leadership of Chief Pristoop, as many people have commented about this to me.

More Proof of the Decline of Western Civilization

Today we sadly learn of the first homicide of the year in Annapolis....and it's still early January. Apparently a man was shot and killed and then his car crashed last night. Not to make a comparison, but we also learn from the local newspaper and the Associated Press that in not-too-far-away Wicomico Church, Va., a 6-year-old Virginia boy who missed his school bus tried to drive to school in his family's sedan - and crashed. The first thing that came to my mind is that's a product of our car-crazed culture which glorifies the automobile and makes driving the goal and dream of even small children who are already completely comfortable with almost living in their cars, watching tv and playing videogames while riding etc., etc.

Then came the killer part of the story: "The boy told police he learned to drive playing Grand Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam video games."

Ah Hah! That's right. A six-year old played that stupid, mindless, and horribly violent Grand Theft Auto.

Then came the second "killer" part of the story: "This really is a story of miracles," Sheriff Wilkins said. "The Lord was with him, along with everybody else on the highway."

Indeed.

The Lord was with him. Our Lord of the Highways. Where was he when the boy was playing playing Grant Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam?
See the news story: Monsters of the Motorways .

Indeed. Now watch this trailer for Grand Theft Auto 4:

The trailer does caution that the game is not appropriate for children under 17. I think that would include six year olds. Did you like the part that says, "As an added twist, GTE 4 gives you an occasional morality choice. There are people you don't have to kill in the mission, and you can decide what you want to do...." ????

How nice. Occasional morality choices. When applicable. When convenient. Did last night's murderer also play that game?

I have not even mentioned the other story today of the man accused of immersing a small child in scalding water. What is that-- a new kind of baptism by fire? Will wonders never cease?

Weikel on Weikel: Part Three

In our last piece, we referenced Chuck Weikel's website to compare what he says with what he does. We conclude our series with one last piece taken from his own web-site:

What Weikel Says: "In 1992 he purchased ABC Industries, a 75-employee specialized manufacturing company based in Illinois and ran it as President and CEO until 2000. He met payrolls and grew the business to almost three times its previous size."

The company may have grown during Weikel's tenure, but it did not last. ABC Industries stands for, or stood for Agricultural Building Company which is apparently out of business. The only reference I could find on the web was a legal opinion in the US District Court for Minnesota on April 30, 2002 for a lawsuit that seems to indicate that the company Weikel co-owned and operated developed serious financial problems. The opinion says that "ABCI, suffered a series of financial setbacks. As a result, it ceased paying the policy's premiums after April, 1998." It also said that "Doubtless, Mr. Lucas and Mr. Weikel were "insiders" -- they were virtually the whole company. ... And there is no question the company was insolvent; that's why it owed money to AMCORE." It's an interesting case involving determining the beneficiary of the life insurance policy of Weikel's business partner who "died on April 6, 2000, from a self-inflicted accidental gunshot wound. The coroner examined the circumstances of the death and found Mr. Lucas's death was accidental." See: court decision

I wrote to Weikel asking him to comment on the above paragraph before I published about it:

My letter:

Dear Sir:
I am about to publish an article about you and would like your comments on the following excerpt: (I included the above mentioned paragraph)

The rest of the article is taken from things you have said and you have written so I do not require any verification or comment. I write this to you out of journalistic fairness although I don't think that this courtesy is either a necessity, nor is it anything you would extend to me or anyone else if the shoe were on the other foot. Indeed you have used emails to various people to personally attack me, but here I stick to facts and let them speak for themselves--another courtesy I don't believe you routinely extend to others either. However, if I receive a reply in a reasonable amount of time, I shall endeavor to include your response or comments on the above piece. I should remind you that the court was not making any judgment about any statements of fact, but accepted the situation as facts. The link I provide to the court case makes that doubly clear.
I hope you will agree that in the normative construct of American journalism, fairness is an absolute.

His Reply:

On Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 3:29 PM, Chuck Weikel <cweikel@mac.com> wrote:

So you are speaking to me again? What is all this about?
Chuck [He cc'd this email to his sidekick Craig Purcell for some "reason"]

My Reply

Mr. Weikel:

No, I see no reason why I would be interested in speaking to you again. I was hoping you would explain what this is about. My email was clear. I am giving you the chance to comment on that excerpt provided in the previous email. It is your choice to do so or not, just as it was your choice to write all the things you have written and published.

Sincerely,

Paul Foer

His Reply: (Which he cc'd to Craig Purcell again and this time also to his brother Ben Purcell, a local builder.)

Darn. I thought you were talking to me again!

My Final Action...I did not bother to reply. I guess I'll just take his response as a roundabout way to say no comment.

However, as further example of his ongoing activities, Weikel sent an email to Democratic Alderman and putative mayoral candidate Dick Israel on December 31. He cc'd this email to Mayor Moyer, a Ward One list, Democratic leaders and activists, aldermen, reporters and of course, the Purcell brothers. He did not share it with CP. I had to get it second-hand. Remember, this is the man whose own website purports to support Democratic Party unity, and civil public discourse. This is a portion of Weikel's letter.

Dear Dick: You want to scuttle public debate on your own City Manager legislation. Do you really believe that a Rules Committee hearing held in the middle of the day suffices for a public hearing before the Council? [CP Note--there have been and there will be more public meetings on this--official and unofficial]

You know better. Its {sic} dishonest and unfair in a democratic system.

Unfortunately, you appear to be leading the way in the abandonment of the rules and process in this Council. ......It would be nice to be King and in charge. I am sure many problems could get solved with that authority.....You now want to undo that and concentrate power in your cabal of 5's hands {sic}.

One can speculate about your motives. In Annapolis especially {sic}. But your latest naked attempt to abandon lawful process stands out as a betrayal of democratic procedure and rule of law that you claim you care about protecting. Stop facilitating the usupring of power by the Council. Its {sic} both undemocratic and unDemocratic. Chuck.

The good alderman replied with a five point refutation of Weikel's charges but his opening paragraph bears repeating:

Dear Chuck:

Your electronic messages of New Year's Eve suggest that you have brought the season of goodwill to an early close. It would be tiresome for me to compose and for you and others to read a detailed response to your assorted jeremiads..... Sincerely, Richard Israel

By the way, according to City-Data.com, this highly partisan Democrat gave $250 on 6-23-99 through ABC Industries to Illinois Congressman Hastert, the Republican Speaker of the House! See: Weikel Hastert . That was back when Weikel was an Illinois businessman.

I hope that I have allowed this story to tell itself and in so doing have provided a public service that is timely and relevant to political activists and those concerned with our community and its governance. I have striven to be fair and to stick to the facts. Reader comments are welcome--unless they are offensive and derogatory. Anonymous comments will be published if appropriate. I don't think this is the last we will hear about Chuck Weikel.

American Contemporary Gallery.....RUMINATING With Art

"Ruminating" by Ellen Murray is one of my favorites in the upcoming show "Works on Paper" January 9 through 31 at The American Contemporary Gallery at 1851 McGuckian Street in Annapolis. The opening party is this Friday evening, January 9. As readers know, CP is quite taken by this new addition to the local art scene, where we have otherwise become complacently sedated with seagulls, sailing ships and summery scenes. That's not all bad of course, and I like sailboats and summer and seagulls (pardon me, but do you have gray poop on?) but what about the amazing work that is happening NOW--as in contemporary art? Owner John Bodkin of the ACG tells CP his gallery has been reviewed in The New York Times and Art News--and that's no small feat for a gallery.

CP is pleased to support the local arts community and would like to share this note from the ACG with you:

Paul,

Thanks for the mention and pictures of the gallery on your blog. I don’t know if you are aware of it but it resulted in 277 people visiting the gallery website. Thanks very much!

Weikel on Weikel: Part Two

Part One of "Weikel on Weikel" focused on some of the most recent divisive and public attacks by this Democratic activist that have caused some notoriety. But why take my word for what Chuck Weikel says and does? Let’s see what Weikel says about Weikel at his democratsforchuck web-site (his words are shown in italics):

What Weikel Writes:
“As Democrats, I believe we must reach out to others. That’s our tradition and our charge.” -- Chuck Weikel
The above appears in a red box across the front page of his web-site, but just below that he attacks Democratic Alderman Shropshire and Republican Alderman Cordle. Then he says:
"Remember, some Aldermen want even more power by establishing a City Manager that bypasses the Mayor and reports only to them. They must stop their own illegal meetings and demand transparency in the City's finances."
By some Aldermen, we assume he means Democrats Arnett, Shropshire and Israel, and Independent Stankivic for supporting a city manager amendment and Republican Cordle as well as Shropshire for what Weikel claimed was an illegal Finance Committee meeting (A recent story he ran running with to the local paper).

Weikel says this: "In politics, Chuck has been a tireless advocate for Annapolis Democrats and has worked on the campaigns of Dick Israel, Sam Shropshire and Ellen Moyer in 2005. Nevertheless, Chuck understands that being an effective Democrat means more than just advocacy – he also has reached out to all those politically involved. He founded and chairs Positive Voices, a Maryland registered bi-partisan PAC that is trying to stop personal attacks on individual candidates by focusing on issues and facts."

[CP NOTE--I can't find anything about a Positive Voices PAC on the web except there is a similar group concerned with AIDS/HIV. If there were such an active PAC, the first thing it would likely do is speak out against Weikel for making personal attacks. ]

..and this:
“ Chuck will also push Democrats to initiate quick and truthful responses to suppress the distortions of opponents.” {CP NOTE-Perhaps Democrats should be doing this to Weikel. I know that Democratic mayoral candidate Trudy McFall has had to do that already.}

What Weikel does: CP has seen emails where he attacks Alderman Shropshire and now, he attacks both Shropshire and Israel for their support of the city manager form of government, not "by focusing on issues and facts" but by virtue of their race and gender. Again I refer you to the wacky-wacist-world-of-weikel .

What Weikel says: Chuck Weikel also believes our county’s central committee has important additional responsibilities including organizing and leadership within the party and improving the quality of political discourse in our daily political life.

What Weikel says: Chuck Weikel understands that hard-core political partisanship is rejected by citizens. Chuck will reach out to the media, community and political groups across the spectrum and work together to change the political tenor of our daily civic life. Politics is not bad and we should be proud to be Democrats!

Not only is his "hard-core political partisanship" rejected here, but I think hard-core political partisans such as Weikel are getting rejected as well. The only question is when is the Anne Arundel DCC going to act "to change the political tenor of our daily civic life" wrought by Weikel?

CP asks-Now that Chuck has attacked the white, male Democratic Aldermen Shropshire and Israel and Arnett for being white males who support a city manager style of government, which he absurdly claims will disenfranchise Blacks in Annapolis, will he remove the below endorsements from his web-site?:

Alderman Sam Shropshire said: “The Democratic Central Committee can use a strong energetic voice like Chuck’s. Please vote for him on September 12.”

Alderman Dick Israel said: “Chuck Weikel has the energy and commitment to be an outstanding member of the Democratic Central Committee.”

In response to his recent wacky, wacist email, Alderman Israel, ever the voice of diplomacy and deliberation wrote a polite and well-reasoned letter to Weikel reminding him of certain historical facts about Annapolis government and politics. I have excerpted a portion of it below:

"While your concern for minority voters is admirable, isn't it time for white folks to step back and let African-Americans speak in their own voice?" Israel went on to remind Weikel of some local history, and then concluded, "If you are truly concerned that the city manager form of government would dilute the democratic principle, I suggest that you use your influence to get the city council to approve the city manager amendment. The amendment can then be petitioned to referendum. Let the people decide. What could be more democratic?"

Weikel wrote a lengthy response to Israel which Weikel copied to me-and at least one other with whom I spoke. He blames Israel for suppressing votes in Ward 6, and says he has worked hard to distance himself from the mayor (Hey Chuck--she does that without the help of others). He says that Israel is "leading what is tantamount to a coup against our 300 year old Charter [which] is both self serving and dangerous. In my opinion, it displays your unfitness to lead on a larger stage."

Tantamount to a coup? He can't be serious. He then says, "I also find it distasteful that you perceive racial issues in everything." Huh? Wuh? Isn't that what Weikel did in his inexcusable rant about the city manager issue?

He reminds Israel that he, the mayor and the central committee worked on his campaign. Wow. I did not know the mayor got involved in aldermanic campaigns. Is that right? I had heard such rumors. I am shocked. Mr Wiekel should do well to remember tht Israel endorsed him for central committee.

Weikel takes off the gloves."You are now running for Mayor. At the same time you are trying to shrink that stage to a size that fits your mind and abilities."

Ooh. What nasty words--a size that fits your mind and abilities. Israel is highly respected for his wit and wisdom as well as his deliberation. For Weikel to attack him in such a manner is ludicrous. But is Weikel running for mayor? Some thought he was, but maybe not anymore. Of course, based on his words and actions, one wonders whether a Weikel administration would be more years of the same anger and finger-pointing we've had for the last seven years.

He continues. "I certainly am not the voice of [sic] Democratic Party in Annapolis. Yet I was elected by over 5,000 Democrats in D-30 in a 6 way race to represent them at the State Party level. I take this responsibility seriously. I believe that we hold the only real [sic] in Annapolis."

The only real what in Annapolis? We are certainly relieved to learn that Weikel is not the voice of the Democratic Party in Annapolis as well. As for his level of seriousness, well, it's open to debate. Weikel concludes:

"It's a large tent. You ought to figure out how to get back under it. Chuck "

Luckily for Weikel, it is a large tent, but perhaps he ought to figure how to get back under it. The question is whether he is the camel sticking its nose underneath that tent-or will soon be that camel. One must ask if Weikel is working for the mayor (on a public salary) to act as her attack-dog, growling at the sponsor of the city manager charter amendment, or maybe even running for mayor himself.

Visit democratsforchuck to see what Chuck Weikel says about Chuck Weikel. One might ask when will there be a "democratswho onewereforchuck" web-site?

In tomorrow's final installment of "Weikel on Weikel" we turn our attention to the business he once successfully ran--or so he says.

Chuck Weikel On Chuck Weikel: Part One of Three

In a recent email blast in which he smeared members of the city council, pandered to and insulted Annapolitans with racial overtones, AA County Democratic Central Committee (AACDCC) member Chuck Weikel has shown that he is fair game for public scrutiny. His method of public discourse may be harming progressive and Democratic interests and that email was beyond the pale. An AACDCC member, associate and employee of the mayor does not just call a group of aldermen racist and then we forget about the whole thing--especially in the context of the charter amendment about our form of government. That's why this is a story. See: wacky-wacist-world-of-weikel .

Weikel has been a positive community activist on many issues. He has registered voters (see: chuck weikel talks the talk and walks the walk), worked on the Envisioning Annapolis program and runs the Annapolis Alive! celebration but this elected member of the AACDCC and once and maybe still putative mayoral candidate reserves his most spirited attacks for fellow Democrats--except the one elected Democrat who has done even more to harm Democratic unity, Mayor Ellen O. Moyer. Perhaps that is because she hired him as the city's “parking coordinator” during a time when the new Knighton Garage lost so much money. Was this based on any policies developed by Weikel? How much was he paid? What did he do in that position? What were his qualifications? Why was an employee of the Department of Transportation also listed as the parking coordinator on the city's web-site during this same period? After I left my position with the department of transportation, I called Weikel two or three times to talk with him about parking issues. He never called me back.

When Eastporters spoke up about gunfire and violent crime last year, I started writing about their issues and Weikel wrote a curt email asking if that group "put me up to it." Put me up to it? Not only do I live in Eastport, but it was quite newsworthy. I wondered if the mayor put him up to write me the email? I tried repeatedly to set up a meeting with him and Stanford Erickson, a leading activist in Eastport to meet each other and explore common ground. Erickson was most willing but Weikel did not return calls to meet with us.

The city's web-site currently lists him as the only member of the Transportation Board--and his term has expired. When Weikel asked for people to join, I offered. Again, he never responded. Perhaps he seemed worried that my well-known disdain for the transportation director was a political hot-potato, never mind my intimate knowledge of the department and of public transportation concerns. When I started inquiring with city officials about why the Board was vacant, Weikel fired off an angry email to Alderman Shropshire(and cc'ing others as usual) blaming him! What was Weikel trying to accomplish by attacking an alderman and fellow Democrat? Is it not up to the mayor to appoint board members? See the pattern--employ the mayor's same old techniques as her attack dog by blaming others.

See more at:The Beste Laide Planse, The Roade to ...

Weikel gave CP a small campaign donation two years ago, and we've had many good discussions about local politics and issues, and his goal of what he calls "disintermediating" the local newspaper. His goal--not mine. I have talked with him and written about the Bay Ferry proposal he and his sidekick, architect Craig Purcell have developed, but they were unhappy because I raised questions about it, and did not support it as enthusiastically as they would have liked.

He seems to enjoy crying wolf to the news media, elected officials and playing them off against each other. I've been victimized by his public email insults and his habit of trying to pressure and demand that media attend to his personal concerns. Almost every email he ever sends is copied to a host of others--often reporters. Soon after Sarah Palin became newsworthy, Weikel called me with supposed inside information about her that only he and a few others knew and he implored me to take his advice and "break" the big, national story, and become famous overnight. I was used to these big inside breaking stories from Weikel and explained that while half the journalists in the US were swarming all over Alaska with expense accounts to uncover everything about Palin, I was happy to stick to local news which did not include Wasilla or Juneau. I was not as circumspect when he used me with his "story" about supposed voter registration restrictions in HACA properties. It was a lot of rumors--mainly with Weikel involved one way or another and was little more than him trying to make mayoral candidate Trudy McFall, look bad.

In November I attended a transportation meeting on the Eastern Shore, where Weikel spoke on a panel as Mayor Moyer's personal consultant on alternative transportation or some such thing. I inquired as to who was paying for Weikel's trip and hotel room in Easton. Instead of a straight answer, he sent me sarcastic emails. For apparent retribution, at the meeting, he got in my face and hounded me because I wore a shirt that had been provided to me years ago when I worked for the city's transportation department. It had a tiny logo on it. That was the same department that had just cut the bus link it once operated to the Eastern Shore but somehow he was more concerned about a shirt. In no way did I identify myself or represent that I was a city employee. I ignored him and I ignored Craig Purcell who similarly hounded me.

Weikel then wrote a potentially libelous letter of complaint about me replete with falsehoods to the Acting City Attorney which he shared with news reporters! Weikel wrote that my "behavior is worthy of note and should be monitored." (Will the "acting" city attorney who did not know he had been effectively disbarred for two years consider the wearing of an old shirt to be worthy of monitoring?) Purcell then re-circulated the letter from Weikel, with some incoherent comments about the "War of Northern Aggression". (In one of his many mass emails, he called Weikel the "Dostoevesky of Annapolis" and copied the complete Wikipedia entry for Dostoevsky. Recently he sent one out with a huge picture of Teddy Roosevelt and a biography of noted muckraker Ida Tarbell).

Weikel's actions are all the more interesting because he is a Naval Academy graduate, former officer and a business executive with an advanced degree. His email signature identifies himself as the Director, Mergers & Acquisitions of the Chicago-based Kinsella Group, Inc., a self-described "boutique investment bank and business advisory group." His bio and picture appears on its web-site.

However, if Weikel or anyone else believes that I am worthy of note and should be monitored, they can easily do so by reading this blog. In this case, I hope more will take his advice but it is Weikel who is truly worthy of note and should be monitored--and here is the best place to do it. Part Two comes out tomorrow and looks at what Weikel says in his web-site. In part three, we will explore the fate of the company this business consultant owned and operated in Illinois and the unusual death of his business partner--an incident about which Weikel was asked to comment upon--and refused. But that may be his way of doing business.

REAL Steps to Live An Environmentally Conscious Life

Thanks to local reporter Pamela Wood whose recent piece Our Bay: Resolving to achieve a cleaner bay gave real and serious recommendations to lower our personal pollution levels. Instead of the usual, "band-aid" approaches and weeny, little things such as not running the tap when brushing our teeth, this serious list never pretends that it's easy to reduce the pollutant effects of our wasteful and luxuriant lifestyles.

Her list begins with getting involved, educated, and bending a politician's ear and goes to eat locally, eat organically and even share the Bay with a child. These are not window-dressing things to lull us into believing that being green is merely an easy set of lifestyle or consumer choices. Some misguided organizations and publications, for example, What's Up Annapolis, still tell us such things while promoting an unsustainable and wasteful lifestyle in a glossy magazine glorifying conspicuous consumption made possible through ads for hard-scaping (basically paving the world...), plastic surgery, fancy cars, and opulent garage (yes garage) and kitchen remodeling.

I especially like number 40 that says, "Speak your mind. Start a blog, write a letter to the editor, speak up at a community meeting, testify at a government hearing."

Thanks to Pamela Wood and her piece Cleaner Bay . Please read it and take action!

Capital Punishment Says "Nuts" To Mayor

Nuts.

There you have it. Nuts. Mayor Moyer may have learned on her jaunt to Europe last year that on December 22, 1944, as the Battle of the Bulge raged, General Tony McAuliffe told the Germans "NUTS" when they asked for his surrender in Bastogne. One of his regimental commanders, a Colonel Harper, told the German captain who was attempting to negotiate that, "If you don't know what 'Nuts' means, in plain English it is the same as 'Go to Hell'. And I'll tell you something else, if you continue to attack we will kill every goddam German that tries to break into this city."
I don't mean to suggest that mayor Moyer has Annapolis surrounded and has asked for our surrender. No. Certainly not, but she is the one who said "nuts" regarding the loss of the 921 bus route that has been so extensively covered here. Nuts. Why do I say nuts to the mayor? First, read my Dec. 30 post about this 921-bus-doomed after the local newspaper reported that she asked our own transit system's boss to pick up the ball--and, well she was away--for two weeks--and the mayor seemed not to know it.

Now a second newspaper has weighed in at Nuts . Both reporters at these two papers have missed the bus on this story. The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is cutting a route that runs almost from Washington, DC (New Carrolton Metro) for about twenty miles through parts of Prince Georges County and Anne Arundel County and then comes into Annapolis for a mile or two. Why should Annapolis, with its own bus challenges pick up the slack? And related to all this is the mayor thinks our city's finances are fine! Well I got my assessment the other day and guess what--it dropped!

Yes Mayor Moyer, the 921 is important to Annapolis. Yes it is admirable that you are concerned but where have you been while our own bus service cut the route into south Anne Arundel County? Where were you when we cut the once a day over and back commuter route to Kent Island? Where were you when Governor Ehrlich cut the 210 commuter bus to and from Baltimore? Why do we not have bus service on Edgewood Road? Why does the bus to BWI only go every two hours? Where were you when census reapportionment resulted in a major loss of federal funding? And most easily corrected of all, where have you been every August for the past seven years when the air conditioning systems failed and failed on our buses? How come you have not filled the vacant transportation board? That's right--empty, as in MTA.

Therefore I say nuts! Yes the 921 is important to Annapolis. Yes it is admirable that the mayor is concerned but where was she when the city's bus driver of the year was awarded the watch presented to him or her by local jeweler and now State Delegate Ron George? The mayor could not present the watch because George is a Republican! I started that annual program with Mr. George and while former Mayor Johnson showed up every year, Ellen O. could not be bothered. She could not walk two blocks to honor the city's driver of the year because the watch was coming from a Republican!

The mayor could never ride on our city buses because it made her sick. Yet that did not stop her from sailing a racing yacht down the Bay, or from going to Europe for six weeks. But riding a city bus? Too much for the mayor who prefers her own SUV.

The mayor is not interested in our transit system. She allows its director, yes the one who is nearly always on a long vacation somewhere, as she learned this time again, to run it as a fiefdom, out of sight and out of mind on Chinquapin Round Rd. Mayor Moyer--get on a bus. Please take a bus ride, or two, or three. Ask for an audit of the finances and management of our bus system. Ask the director to publish an annual report of performance. I did that every year when I was the marketing specialist. It's stopped since. Ask the department to publish a customer's bill of rights. I did and was told I was crazy. Ask the director to set performance goals, develop a mission statement and a vision. I did and was told I was crazy. Ask the director what happened to all the lovely Maryland native species gardens and landscaping I created at the department. They've been plowed over and abandoned--despite a small army of environmentalists, sustainability coordinators and horticulturalists in the DNEP that you created at such expense to we the taxpayers. Ask why many of the buses do not even display the logo-decals that identify the vehicles as Annapolis City buses!

Take care of our own bus system within the city in which we live and then we might take you seriously when you grandstand to save a bus route that goes out of the city and through two other counties.

I say nuts. Let's see what the transportation director says after her two weeks away, probably to her vacation home in Pennsylvania. That 100k plus annual salary can take you far in the world....far away from Annapolis, even further than Pennsylvania, as it has many times.

Does anybody else think that a city manager might have handled things differently? Might have known if we have the resources to take up this route? Might have known if one of her department heads was away for two weeks? Might have known enough about the budget to have an answer herself?

To learn more about the 921 route, search for "921" on the search bar to the right and watch the video on the upper right where I recently addressed the Parole Rotary Club about our local transportation issues. And thanks for reading!
