Mayoral Campaign Web-sites, Diff'rent Strokes for Diff'rent Folks

As we continue to review mayoral campaign websites, we note that Wayne Taylor has finally taken down his original one-pager that was scathingly reviewed by CP. While I am concerned it took so long for Taylor to get the message, his site is under reconstruction at www.waynetaylor.us and we eagerly anticipate improvements.

Alderman Dave Cordle's site, like the candidate himself, is clean-cut, straightforward, and unadorned. He has a contribution's page, a news page (not much for now), a volunteer sign-up page, a biographical page and an issues page. While I find it interesting to know about Dave's family history, I just don't think it's relevant enough to deserve top-billing. Perhaps a footnote would be more fitting. He has an issues page and not surprisingly the lawman's and fiscal conservative's first two points are to:

  • Make Public Safety a Priority
  • Trim the Fluff and Favors from the City Budget
Those are great priorities but there is nothing about environment or transportation. I would rate his site third behind McFall's and Shropshire's site. See: www.davecordle.com

A smiling and avuncular photo of Sam Shropshire invites the reader into his attractive site www.friendsofsam.com that includes an impressively produced 11-minute video about his vision for Annapolis. Some of it seems to be an ad for the National Sailing Hall of Fame and his focus on bringing the USS Constellation to Annapolis is...well....unworkable and ill-advised and not likely on anyone's priority list for a "vision" except Sam's list. Would Baltimore even consider lending us their ship? "Let's bring the boat home" says Sam. I question the appropriateness of him displaying the official city logo. He gets good marks overall for a site that is second in development and depth only to that of Trudy McFall's site (see below) and demands some time to review.

Gil Renaut's page www.gilbertrenaut.com can be described as a work in progress, albeit uninspiring for now. He has the standard donation page, but his home page consists of an honest but perhaps overly cerebral piece about environmentalism. Renaut may be the most philosophical candidate but I am not sure what he is getting at here or how it relates to his campaign. His "about" page is bare bones but solid. His five main points are presented clearly and simply....and they are meaningful. I expect more issues-oriented and thoughtful copy soon.

Trudy McFall's site, as with her campaign, has been up the longest and is by far the most developed and updated, even when compared to Shropshire's site. It includes a video, a recording of her announcement speech, and a lot of photographs that shows us more about her than any of the other sites tell us about the other candidates. She lists her many priorities as mayor and provides plenty of her thoughts about issues. Interesting, most appropriately, and to her credit, she has a "Facts Check" page which I cynically expect every candidate to eventually have. Expect to take more than a few minutes to visit www.trudymcfall.com .

Frank Flyntz officially announced months ago and while he has a reasonably designed web-site, it's thin gruel. There has not been anything of substance added since it was put up and like the candidate, remains obscure. There is a photo of him in his navy uniform, which I find odd and troubling as there are no other pictures. His logo is of a navy jet streaking across stars and stripes which I also find odd and troubling. His issues page is simple and straightforward, perhaps too much so, and I wonder what he means by "Improve the parking issues." One of his top priorities is to "strengthen partnership" with you guessed it--The Naval Academy. I am not sure if he is running for Commander in Chief Naval Operations Spa Creek (CINCSPA?) or mayor of Annapolis. He may not be sure either. Take off, soar upward and land at www.frankflyntz.com but you won't stay long.

CP will review sites of other putative or rumored candidates when they officially announce. But if you are really curious....Chris Fox has a lot to read at www.foxformayor.com and Josh Cohen has but a splash page www.cohenformayor.com while Zina Pierre's site www.zinapierre.com , though attractive, seems to be all about Zina, who as of now, has but only an "exploratory committee." Sorry, but I can't find anything anywhere about Mike Pantelides though not from lack of trying to reach this "maybe" candidate.

These are my observations as of March 22, so as the sites change, please keep that in mind.

Some Arresting News About County Police..."Just The Facts Ma'am" No Longer Applies

Arundel Muckraker, our stalwart local investigative reporter continues to go where no man has gone before...not to outer space, but to our county police stations, merely seeking arrest log books that are supposed to be available to the public. It seems as if four county stations don't want to share this information with Muckraker, who is to be commended for doing his investigative work.

Perhaps some readers remember Jack Webb from "Dragnet?" While playing the good L.A. detective, he, as Sgt Joe Friday would often come across loquacious informants who usually told him more than he wanted to know. Friday would utter in his famous monotone, "Just the facts Ma'am."

It seems that local police stations won't even divulge that these days.

Senator's Advice to AIG Executives...

Senator Charles Grassley recently remarked that AIG Insurance executives should do like the Japanese and go before the American people, bow and apologize and then maybe go commit suicide.....

(CP Notes: I am all for that but could they please repay the bonuses first? And come to think of it, cancel their life insurance policies too...or perhaps name the taxpayers as beneficiary?)

City Manager Petition Prepares to Launch

Within the next couple of weeks, one of the most important political efforts ever undertaken in The City of Annapolis will be underway, with the goal of creating a city manager form of government. Following the narrow defeat of a bill in the city council, citizen activists have now taken it upon themselves to take this to a referendum, most likely to coincide with the fall elections. It will all be based on a petition which has been readied and sent through proper legal reviews.CP has seen the petition and is ready to help promote it and get the required number of signatures. A basic web-site has already been created.

Keep any eye out here at CP for updates.

In the Know with The Onion Pundits... on The National Money Hole

Ahh the Washington pundits. You gotta love 'em...and you gotta love The Onion....LOL....ha ha ha

Q. "Why are you pushing this pro-hole agenda? Is the money-hole lobby paying you?"

A. "I resent that accusation. I do not take money from special interests and if I did, I would throw it right in the hole, because I am a patriot."

A. "If you love America, you throw money in its hole."

Could you see a similar thing happening at a City Council meeting?

More On Wacky World of Weikel

Today's Capital has an editorial about the failed Annapolis Alive! celebration that has left local businesses holding the bag. It was headed up by local celebrity Chuck Weikel, the subject of some of CP's attention for his outrageously divisive political activities. See: Weikel's Party.

Who Will CP Endorse for Mayor?

As if you really cared....the answer is a flat out NOBODY. Yup. Nobody for mayor. Why?

For starters, who solved the Market House debacle? Nobody!

Who filled the ranks of our police department? Nobody!

Who completed the police department renovation ? Nobody!

Who fixed our ailing bus system? Nobody!

Who lowered taxes? Nobody!

Okay, you get my point. Were I purely a cynical miscreant, I would go on and on....but being a different type of miscreant, I stopped there. However, I will endorse only one candidate--"Nobody."

It is not appropriate for me to endorse anyone, and while I have information and knowledge, does anyone really care who I or anyone else supports for mayor? It's your vote, not mine. The big issue is maintaining some distance from the candidates, especially since I am going to be writing about this in the coming months. I know all the announced candidates, so let us begin with the assumption that I have a bias (no kidding?) but that I will do my best to be fair. I will simply try to maintain my constant state of being an equal opportunity exploiter. I'll try to expose their strengths and weaknesses and mediate what I see, know and hear about the candidates. You and the candidates may not like what I write, but if you find any inaccuracies or falsehoods, write me a letter--but not anonymously. You know my take on that. If you disagree or want to rebut what I say, go right ahead. I welcome it.

But remember this--being mayor is an awesome responsibility. Anybody who wants to lead our city and oversee $81 million in public funds, and 600 public servants deserves our respect for placing themselves squarely in the public eye and for devoting themselves to a challenging and sometimes difficult campaign. They are wiling to step up and be noticed--positively or negatively. It takes great fortitude. If we respect the office, we must respect their candidacy. They will have my respect, but they will also have my jaundiced eye and poison keyboard ready--each and every one of them. All I can promise is that I'll try to be fair.

Already we have hosted Sam Shropshire (D), Dave Cordle (R) and Trudy McFall (D) at our weekly Sip N' Blogs as well as two Republican aldermanic candidates, Scott Bowling and Greg Stiverson. We have mayoral hopeful Wayne Taylor (D) on board for next week (if he's not too angry with me for the post about his web-site) and I'd like to get the other candidates as well--once they have officially stood up and said "I am running for mayor" so hopefully we'll have Josh Cohen (D), Zina Pierre (D), Chris Fox (I), Mike Pantelides (R--where "R" you?) and we even had Frank Flyntz (R) as a guest, though not featured speaker. Gil Renaut (D) should know the door is open. To the above candidates, which Thursday morning can you attend?

I am not hiding the fact that I am hoping that all these candidates will advertise on CP so how can I in good conscience endorse anyone? Both Trudy McFall and Gil Renaut advertise through Google, which places ads on CP based on their own formula. Those candidates do not contract with or pay CP directly, and ad revenue accrues to CP only if readers click on their ads. In those cases, I believe that similarly, a charge is placed against the advertiser. However, I may opt to block such ads and insist that the candidates advertise directly with me--and without any compunction on my part. Josh Cohen has already contacted me about advertising. See--I have nothing to hide--so why should any readers or commenters? After all, I am equal opportunity exploiter.

(p.s. The above also goes for any local race)
(p.p.s. I will happily attend parties, announcements and fundraisers--in the interest of reporting the news of course...which means I cannot make a donation or buy a ticket of course)
