The Capital, the The Sun and all the local television stations have both reported on the recent abduction attempt of a woman along Poplar Avenue yesterday. It is a relief that this person, James Haney, was stopped (props to the construction workers) and arrested and hopefully will feel the force of the courts coming down on them.
While this story has a good ending, I consider this a violent crime. And I wonder why it was put on the back burner yesterday when it happened.

This concludes the Annapolis Police - Neighborhood Watch - Community Policing Report. Remember, "Reducing Criminal Opportunities is Crime Prevention. (Below not read in broadcast version, included in E-Mail and WEB versions only) Contact us by E-Mail at: apdcommunityservices@annapolis.govI have no idea why this type of crime should be hushed up? Is there an edict coming from a political office? But it seemed that the police did an about face (save face) move an hour later with a Press Release detailing what they already did not broadcast.
5. ATTEMPTED ABDUCTION: On June 10th at 8:26 AM, a motorist reported seeing what appeared to be an attempted abduction. The caller said that the driver of a blue Toyota pulled over next to an adult female pedestrian as she was walking on Poplar Avene near Locust Avenue. The driver of the Toyota, a male, got out of the car and grabbed the pedestrian by the arm and tried to pull her towards a wooded area, according to the witness. She screamed for help. Other motorists stopped and focused their attention on the suspect and victim. Apparently, that was enough to cause him to give up his attempt. The victim ran back to one of the other cars in the area, and that driver allowed her to get in her car. She then drove the victim to the police station. The suspect got back in his car and drove off. Witnesses were able to give a good description of the suspect*s vehicle, as well as the tag number. A responding officer spotted the car on the East side of Poplar Avenue. The suspect refused to stop for the officer. The officer followed until the suspect vehicle struck a parked Ford Pick up truck on Poplar Avenue. The suspect then drove off the roadway up onto a grassy hill medium. Officers were close behind and the suspect got out of his car brandishing a knife. He was ordered to drop the knife and gunpoint and did so. He then began to flee on foot, but some construction workers form a house remodeling project nearby had seen the events and were lining up in a manner to stop the suspect. Apparently the suspect took note of this and gave up his escape attempt. He was taken into custody without further incident. The female victim was located, who said that she does not know the suspect. She was identified as a 39 year old Arundel on The Bay Road resident. The suspect was identified as a 34 year Richard James Haney of the 1400 block of Norcross Lane in Severn, Maryland. He is currently in custody and is expected to be formally charged this afternoon with Attempted Abduction and other related offenses. (08-003507)
Kudos for offering the email service of crimes. Kudos for doing the WNAV report. Big Kudos for catching this guy. But why was this not a lead item in the police report? Why was this not broadcast on the radio? Did they just figure the Capital and other media might miss it and we could go on wiht the pretense that we live in a safe little haven called Lilliput?

Is it a cover up? Or just more of the Keystone Cops?
Considering this is in every newspaper, including the AP wire, I have no idea how you can consider this "hushed up"?
And I don't see how you can justify the "full force of the court" - the job of the court is not to deliver force but to determine the truth and deliver justice. For all you know, she could have been a hooker that just stiffed him in a drug deal ... it seems odd that he would just pull over on the side of the road and try to drag her into a wooded area to rape her in broad daylight.
Perhaps you should let the system do its thing and not rush to judgment with an internet lynch mob like lawless wild west gangster thugs. He is after all innocent until proven guilty.
Why was it not broadcast or read initially? Seems like a pretty major crime to me for Annapolis. Seems to me that the Capital may have made an inquiry after the "not read" report and then a more formal release was presented.
And of course it was picked up by the AP but what about initially.
And the paper tonight indicates the motive is unknown but it did seem pretty random and a crime of opportunity.
If it had been a kid would they have "nor read it on the air"?
There is a crime problem here in the area and there are plenty of people to blame--citizens, police, government and yes the justice system.
OK the guy is presumed innocent. Fine, let it go through the courts and give him a fair trial. But right now it looks like he was looking to harm. Maybe on drugs? But wanna bet he get's a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again.
Just like the guy who had a list of kids he wanted. Just like the cat stomper, just like any number of criminals wandering our streets
I saw this coming YEARS ago.
I knew this creep in highschool. His parents even warned MY parents of his "Bad Temper" if I ticked him off. He has always been aggressive, violent, and overly-consumed with sex. I am not surprised this has happened. I am just SO GLAD this woman was lucky enough to escape him. I hope he is not given the opporunity to attempt this again.
i have know the "alleged creep" since before highschool and i personally have never seen him aggressive or violent. if he has always been like that then why hasn't any other girl ever complained about him before? has any other girl ever been forced to have sex with him? not to say for sure he is inocent but i need more evidence to convince me that he was going to commit a terrible crime. just because he may have been in a fight with a guy before does not mean he would hurt a girl. has he ever been aggressive or violent with a girl before? just because he likes sex does not make him a rapist, a lot of guys love sex, that doesn't make them rapist. i can honestly say i never would of guessed richard to do something like that and i can guarantee i've known him longer than you. and yes i am a girl that is sticking up for him. i do hope that he is indeed inocent and that there was some other reason behind his actions that morning.
i also know richard, went to school with him, dated him and i don't believe he would hurt a girl. something is wrong with this picture.
In response to the July 30 comment, I tend to think there is more to your story than you have shared. Maybe you have some anger or jealousy issues that you need to deal with. I have known Richard all his life and this action came as a TOTAL surprise to me. I know that there is more to this story and that he is not a kidnapper or a rapist. I am so sorry for the lady involved and thank God that she was only scared and not harmed. I also hope that Richard gets the help he may need but instead of tring to defame him on the enternet I'll let the legal system take it's course. If he did wrong he'll have to pay the punishment.
