Taken from the city's Crime Watch reports:
SUSPENDED DRIVER: On July 8th at 1:46 PM, a traffic stop was made at
Hilltop and Chatham Lanes due to a driver failing to stop for a
pedestrian in the cross walk at Hilltop and Spa. The driver was
identified as Lisa Dawn Williams 40, of Aberdeen. A check revealed that
her license was suspended. She was charged with the Crosswalk Violation
as well as Driving On A Suspended License. Due to the fact that she had
two small children with her, she was not taken into custody, but rather
released on her signature. A friend with a valid license responded to
drive her car for her from that point. (08-004190)
Did you get that? Her name is Lisa Dawn Williams! Why are her children who are in the car more important than our children who might have been in the crosswalk? Why does she think she can drive on a suspended license? Why was it suspended? What say ye Lisa Dawn Williams of Aberdeen? This is another example of why supposedly minor or routine traffic violations are NOT MINOR!!
And another story....You Have Just Won A Toyota!!! Send Money to Guatemala Now!!
FRAUD: 7/7 245 Farragut Ct. - a 33 year old resident reported that
she received a letter in Spanish that told her she had won a Toyota. She
was instructed to wire $1,800.00 ostensibly for taxes. She did so to an
address in Guatemala. She then received instructions to send another
$1,800.00 and made inquiries and discovered that it was a fraud.

Paul, crosswalk violations are in fact NOT a minor violation in Maryland, rather a jailable one. So is driving while suspended.
Reckless driving is, in Maryland, not jailable (I think it should be), but crosswalk violations are worse than reckless driving in MD.
This is a world away from ticky-tacking a driver for doing 54 in a 50.

Thanks for the note. You see that I wrote "supposedly minor or routine traffic violations are NOT MINOR". As a regular walker who believes that walkability=livability, I have often written on this topic to lend my support to our police who are cracking down on crosswalk and other, what I called, "supposedly minor or routine traffic violations." I played a minor role in bringing local attention to this issue and getting our police more involved. When they did their first crosswalk enforcement operation, The Capital took them to task for slowing down traffic on West Street. Heck-what's wrong with slowing down traffic so people can get to the other side of the road?
What do you suppose that LISA DAWN WILLIAMS who drives around with her two children on a suspended license (why did that happen?) will do next? All she got was a little slap.
Another accident averted in some way. I will take a humanistic approach here and say maybe she did not see the pedestrians, maybe the crosswalk is in need of being marked more clearly, maybe she was just spacing out.
Yes she had a suspended license and she needs to answer to that and the crosswalk. But are you suggesting she be hauled in and jailed in front of her two kids for this?
I think the police did ok on this one.She has been fined and presumably will have her day in court, the suspended driver was not allowed to continue to drive,
Now as to the dumb ass that sent $1800! Everyone knows Toyotas are made in Japan and Kentucky. They don't have any plants in Guatemals. But hey, if you have their address...they might be interested in a piece of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge!
AA Crime:
My take on it is that this woman has already endangered her own children and now endangers others--such as ours. Roads and cars and car-related land use dominates our world. Sidewalks and crosswalks are the only refuge we have yet they are violated all the time. You can get a ticket for jaywalking--as if that could endanger a car! So this suspended driver violates the safety of the crosswalk and gets a little slap.
Why was her license suspended in the first place? She is anti-social and has no respect for the law. Walking is a public right in public spaces. Feet came before cars. Humans made of flesh and bone weigh less than cars.
