If it's in USAToday it must be true. After reporting that gas prices are resulting in a big drop in vehicle miles driven, the US DOT Secretary, instead of realizing this is a watershed event, turns it on its head and says, "By driving less and using more fuel-efficient vehicles, Americans are showing us that the highways of tomorrow cannot be supported solely by the federal gas tax," she said in a statement. "We must embrace more sustainable funding sources for highways and bridges through more sustainable and effective ways such as congestion pricing and private activity bonds."
In other words---we are driving less, therefore we need to continue doing business as usual--but need to find new ways to pay for it. Maybe instead of highways of tomorrow, we need other ways to get around. As Dave Barry would say, "I am not making this up." This irony is killing me. Killing me.
