Gilbert Renaut of Murray Hill has announced that he will be a Democratic candidate for mayor. Four years ago, the former Ward One Residents Association leader and retired federal attorney ran as an Independent in a three-way race against incumbent Ellen O., and a former policeman and Alderman George Kelly. As I recall, he got about one-third of the popular vote city citywide, with Kelly in third place with under twenty percent. Moyer took about half the total vote. I am sure there is a record of this somewhere......
Now he's running for mayor as a Democrat. He lists eight main points in his news release. None of the boilerplate issues are terribly bold, innovative or visionary, but at least he has a solid platform. Among them are that he supports:
"Hiring qualified professional management for the City, despite the City Council’s recent vote against it, with particular focus on the Market House, the recreation center, and police headquarters."
Now I ask you, does that say he will promise to work to create a city manager form of government? No. It does not. However, he does say:
“Whatever the Mayor’s job is worth, in the current economic climate I could not in good conscience accept the salary increase recently proposed. I will give any such increase to charity or back to the City.”
But which one Gil--charity or the city??? By the time we get a new mayor, there may not be any difference.
