From today's issue of the local paper:
An article about a bill about home delivery of wine (on the front page no less!! ...as was the Chandra Levy story):

And a column about that topic:

And a piece about a vineyard and wine producer on the Eastern Shore:
www.hometownannapolis.com/cgi-bin/read/2009/02_22-02/REG
And a report on a liquor license fee bill in the General Assembly:

And then there is of course, the regular column on wine by the editor that comes out earlier each week. Yes, wine and coffee are important to many people. After all they contain addictive substances--something which has a long tradition with newspapering. I drink a cup of decaf in the morning and I do enjoy beer and wine--and reading about it as well, but one must be careful when a few sips can lead to a major binge. I have posted before about their seeming obsession with coffee and coffee shops, and readers may recall the recent brew-ha-ha from a particular coffee shop owner complaining that the paper does not write enough about his shop!
What really concerns me is not any assumed or putative relationship between liquor and beer sellers advertising and therefore being written about as much as I am concerned about what this says about news values of the paper. While all of this is being covered, Mayor Moyer is away again at another conference while her shadow government continues to spend more and more improperly authorized public money, the police station renovation drags on, the council may vote itself and the mayor a huge pay-raise etc., etc. It's enough to make us all drink!
Did I fail to mention the coverage of the Chandra Levy case. You do remember her of course?
Point made. I think I'll try the 1939 Gran Depression from Clos du Banc. Pass the bottle. Yeah that'll do, the 1939 Gran Depression from Clos du Banc.
