Late this morning, a student was reported to have a gun at Annapolis HS. When the student noticed police at campus, he ran and dropped the gun.The school was locked down and the student was arrested.
This afternoon, at about 4 pm, the school sends out an email notification and at the same time, automatically calls parents. This is the message:
"Hello Annapolis High School parents, this is Anne Arundel County Public Schools e-mailing on Thursday, May 14, with some important information. A letter was sent home with students today regarding an incident that happened at the school. As a precaution, the school was placed on a Code Red lockdown for approximately 90 minutes while police and school officials dealt with a situation outside the school. The letter was sent so that you would have complete information as to what happened and how it impacted the instructional day. If your child did not bring the letter home and you wish to see it, please call the school on Friday morning to make arrangements to receive a copy. Thanks, and have a good evening."
Only a bureaucracy such as our school system could have all these tools at their disposal and then misuse them and then give us the following instruction: "If your child did not bring the letter home and you wish to see it, please call the school on Friday morning to make arrangements to receive a copy."
WHY THE HECK DID THEY NOT JUST READ THE LETTER OVER THE PHONE AND SEND IT TO US IN THE EMAIL INSTEAD OF SENDING US TWO MESSAGES TELLING US WE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN IT AND IF WE DID NOT, TO CALL THE SCHOOL????....ay yay yay....typical educratic process.
We can all be thankful that nothing horrible happened. Such is life in the big city. Oh, and be sure to thank the NRA.

This is very unfortunate. Schools are supposed to be a place where kids feel safe, and are able to focus on learning and being educated; mot worrying that they may not make it out alive.
I was there >>
Stuck in English class for three hours!
Consider yourself lucky....
why do administrative drone-types say "impacted" instead of " affected"; it sounds pretentious.
Paul, I find your last comment troubling. How does blaming the NRA for some kid having a gun at school further a gun control position? I am pretty sure that this was not a firearm purchased legally.
All gun control does is restrict those least likely to commit crimes. Felons, juveniles, and mentally disturbed comprise almost 100% of gun crimes. There are already laws forbidding these groups from owning guns.
Restricting guns, or blaming the NRA for gun crimes, merely leaves normal people at the mercy of predators.
Brian You find my last comment troubling? Heck-it was intended more or less tongue in cheek. However, how would you know a thing about where or how this gun was purchased, yet you write "I'm pretty sure hat this was not a firearm purchased legally"?
Legal or not--the more guns there are, the easier it is to get one-- yes?
How can you substantiate the following? "Felons, juveniles, and mentally disturbed comprise almost 100% of gun crimes."
Show me the data. prove it. The funny thing about your statement is that you use the term "gun crimes". Well of course if someone commits a "gun crime" he or she is a felon-by definition. Same for mentally disturbed, at least according to many standard definitions. As for juveniles--well....that was precisely my point, was it not? So what exactly is your point?
I guess you seem to forget the thousands of gun deaths committed by accident or by children getting a hold of daddy's gun etc, etc.
You believe we all should have guns and that will make us safer. I believe pretty much the opposite. But take it a step further, and you just seemed to say that juveniles should not have guns. Well, if we armed all students, and one did go on a rampage, the others could presumably shoot and stop the perpetrator if they were armed too--yes?
And by further logic, is a mentally disturbed person, felon or juvenile more likely to get a gun in a culture where guns are highly restricted or in a culture where just about everyone is armed?
In any event, it's sort of like the abortion argument. There is one side. And there is another. They are not likely to ever meet. However, I've handled pistols, rifles and shotguns. I've also gotten in a fight or tow--and thankfully nobody had a gun. Settling differences with fists still can work--more or less, though I prefer rational discussion. Despite the willingness of some (perhaps you?) to pigeonhole me as a weeny liberal or raging left-wing commie or some such thing, I've also had plenty of discussions with gun owners and gun advocates and law enforcement officers. I've listened. I've considered their views. I've heard their side. I just don't agree with them. Or with you.
But that is often the difference between me and my detractors. They are unwilling to hear another side but accuse me of being that way. How silly.
As far as "normal people" being at the "mercy of predators", here's one to blow your top. Would normal people include most citizens while predators would include Bush and Cheney Incorporated?
Thanks for the comment, but you know how to get a hold of me if you want to have a discussion--and not unfairly accuse me of certain things as you have done--and thankfully, for which you later apologized.
