All The Mayor's Men.....Democrats In a Major Internal Hissy-Fit...Where Does It Lead? FOE? FOJ?

In reverse chronological order, these emails document some of the internal conflict ripping the local Democratic party apart--much of it due to the attitudes and actions of Boss Ellen and her henchman,Chuck Weikel.  Weikel has made a career of dissension, character assassination and attacking other Democrats publicly--AND PERHAPS CLANDESTINELY....and is a member of the central committee running for re-election. Where does it lead? Where does it end?  Nick Berry is the city's central committee chair and has come out against Weikel, though in a lukewarm manner. Steve Kling is the city attorney and a big FOE. Why is he involved? Clarence Goldberg is another big FOE and FOJ supporter and treasurer/report prepares for many Democratic candidates. Gail Smith is Josh Cohen's legislative aide and a member of the central committee. Kory Blake is chair of the county central committee, a staff member of AFSCME-the union whose members serving city government make up a huge portion of our city's budget---and the same union that endorsed Cohen without interviewing or considering other candidates, AND Mr. Blake did share a residence with Chuck Weikel--though he says he has moved--but not according to the voter registration rolls.
Read these messages and try to piece a story together from the bottom up--and see how Weikel is again requesting that the city attorney get involved and do his legal work ON OUR TIME...Cohen steps into this asking for cooler heads to prevail....hmmmm....but these are the same people that....oh never mind....Moyer does her usual... I think this whole thing is another reason why we need to eliminate partisan elections in town. Only these highly partisan types will oppose--and if highly partisan types get elected by these highly partisan types--what will be the odds of making this happen. If the Democrats cannot get together and simply tell Chuck Weikel to get lost, what good are they? What good are any of them?
BUT HERE IS THE BIG ISSUE....Look at who is in this inner circle, this gang--this machine--AND LOOK WHO IS NOT...

I agree with John's message, however, Nick, I totally disagree with your last sentence.  As the chair of the ADCC, you have executed no leadershipfor a positive perception of the party as a whole.  You have been  silent when Democrats have followed the rhetoric of the opposition party.  As a result we are at risk of losing our blue status in the ocean of red.

Josh,
Well, who initiated the sniping, attacking Ross, Dick, Trudy, the ADCCand me? Talk of working together! The current disagreement is about who can be members of the ADCC. Yes, only members can vote for officers at the first meeting following the primary. But in the last election only Tony and Gail ran,
the rest had to be appointed, including me. To structure the filling of vacancies, ADCC by unanimous vote on November 20, 2007 passed an amendment to the Bylaws, "Nomination and Selection Procedures for ADCC Membership Representative and  Alternate Vacancies." The impetus was that vacancies are not good,
wards not represented, voters not in the loop. We will have three member vacancies after the primary that, according to the amendment, should be filled by October 20, which happens to be our next meeting. You're right, we should focus on the upcoming city election, which has been my aim all along.
Victory in '09!
Nick

 All:

This sniping has no place in our Party.  Disagreements are fine, but these public tit-for-tat exchanges are completely counterproductive. Everyone on the ADCC is going to be working together for the next four years.  How will any of this sniping further our goals of a cooperative and productive ADCC? It won't. It needs to stop. After the Primary we all need to pull together.  Let's start now.

 Respectfully,
 Josh

Your activities continue to be counter to Party unity and making awinning coalition.  Too bad, the choices are  yours. Look at what the definition of a 'member' is.  It's only those elected in the 8 wards plus an at large.  It's VERY specific.

Your rantings against me won't change that.

Chuck

Btw - how many doors have you knocked, voters registered, moneyrasied or campaigns run in the last five  years?  Or this year for that matter.

Sorry, can't stop when challenged. The bylaws clearly provide for filling vacancies for the wards in which no one is elected. I'm right because the bylaws say so. And thanks for permission to call you names, all of which you deserve.

Me?  You are emailing the world.  You need to stop it. The by laws are clear.  Only members can vote for officers.  Andonly electeds are members. You can call me all the names you like.  That won't make you
right.

      Dear Democrats,
Chuck is at it again, being his usual divisive renegade sel and off base. According to the amendment to the bylaws dated November 20, 2007, there is a 30 day window to seek nominations for members to fill the vacancies. The vacancies exist after September 16, one day after the primary. Nominations are to be made by October 15. Then there are five days to vote on the nominees, which coincides, after 30 days and the five days for voting, with our first meeting "f ollowing each anniversary of the quadrennial primary
election," which is October 20. Officers are then elected for one year terms by those members of the ADCC.
If Chuck would like to run for an office, which he is free to do, he must notify Gail Smith of his intent and be on the ADCC ballot at our October 20
meeting.

        Steve:

Nick Berry is trying to rig the ADCC election.
The by-laws are quite clear.  The definition of a 'member' is only those elected.  Period. So only (presumably) myself, Nick, Gail, Tony, Trudy McGowan and the elected from Ward 7 may vote for the officer positions.

Since the ADCC is constituted under City law, I request you advise the current Chair of the proper procedures under the existing by laws and his liabilities if he does not follow them.

          Dawn and Chuck:

Nick is being very cute. Note that he wants to elect officers of the ADCC after the "full" ADCC is chosen even though the By Laws state: Article IV, B-"The officers of the Committee are elected annually from within the membership of the Committee at the first meeting following each anniversary of the quadrennial (recurring every four years- lasting for or relating to aperiod of four years) primary election."

          Dear ADCC Members and Friends,
Our bylaws and amendments are rather specific on vacanciesand filling them. Yet, we want to fill them as soon as possible after the primary. Only those on the ballot and their alternates will be on the ADCC after
the Sept. 15 primary. There will be member and their alternate vacancies for Wards 3, 5, and 6 (although we encourage Wil, Jim, Earlene, and Loni to be fully involved at our meetings and events.) In addition, there will be alternatevacancies for at-large and Ward 8. The bylaws state that the member nominateshis/her alternate.  Once there are vacancies (Sept. 16), there is a 30-day window for the chair to receive nominations from the members for members and alternates. A short bio of the nominees will be sent to the members.
So, on October 15 nominations will close. If the members want a meeting to question the nominees, it will be held Thursday, October 15. Then there will be five days for members to vote by e-mail or telephone to the chair, ending at 5 pm on October 20. The reconstituted ADCC will then meet at 7 on October 20 our
regular meeting date. The full ADCC will elect officers at that meeting, Gail Smith having already received the names of those who want to serve as chair, vice chair, secretary, and treasurer. Nominations can also be made  at the meeting. Gail and another member will conduct the election.

In the meantime, we (new and old ADCC members and friends) need to meet soon after the September primary to plan a fundraiser/volunteerrecruitment event for our entire slate. We can't wait until October 20. Let me and the Committee have your thoughts soon on such an event. I will call a
meeting for Wednesday, September 23 to be held at our partner's District 30 meeting (6:30 at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 87 West Street) where together withD30 and our candidates (who will be present)  we can plan the event.
Let me know if you have any questions. Victory in '09!
          Nick
