The Parole Rotary Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G.) Project will hold a book sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, at 1325 Marlboro Road, Lothian, MD 20711 (the Triangle Tobacco Warehouse at Wayson’s Corner). B.I.G. is the signature project of the Parole Rotary Club, and has sent over 3.8 million books to developing countries and over 6,000 books to U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, including recipients from the Annapolis area. Profits from this and other sales go toward covering upcoming shipments to Rwanda, Nigeria, Kenya and the Philippines. B.I.G is an all-volunteer operation and sends books for an average of 15 cents each. The last sale raised $6,000 toward shipping books.
Over 60,000 new and good used books of all kinds will be available at the sale. More than 50% of the books for sale have been added since the last sale. Prices are $1.50 for hardbacks, $1 for trade paperbacks and 50 cents for pocket paperbacks. Or fill a grocery bag for only $30.
USNA Football Game Parking as well..
Naval Academy home football games attract thousands of cars to the stadium for each home game in Annapolis. Many fans come early and many set up tailgate parties. Without some strict organization, there would be chaos, hot tempers and inefficient use of the parking spaces. For more than 10 years the Naval Academy has turned to the Rotary Club of Parole (Annapolis) to provide that organization by directing the parking at each home game.
For the 3:30 PM kickoffs this year, gates are opened and staffed beginning at 9:00 AM. By kickoff time, most of the cars are parked and most Rotary members have been on their feet for more than 6 hours. When the parking is done, Rotary members can be found near Gate 7 having a party of their own to relax and relate parking stories of the day to others.
The Naval Academy shares the parking fees with the Rotary Club for providing this service by giving the Club over $40,000 during the football season. This money is combined with other funds raised by the Club and is given back to the community in terms of grants to worthy and needy local organizations.
Previous recipients of Parole Rotary grants include Woods Community Center for a Swim Lift for handicap access to the center’s therapy pool, the Organization of Hispanics/Latin Americans for educational bi-lingual brochures for county citizens, Anne Arundel Medical Center for Safety Planning Kits for victims of abuse and domestic violence, Chrysalis House for an update of its technological infrastructure, Annapolis High School to purchase baseball bats, and Anne Arundel Community College for annual scholarships.
