The Capital Is A Bit Confused...

In the below editorial, The Capital is apparently writing about the public hearing about the reaccreditation of our police department. CP publishes it below in its entirety, and then adds a comment:

VOTE OF CONFIDENCE - A couple years ago a public hearing at which city residents were asked to comment on the performance of the Annapolis Police Department would likely have been jammed - and not with happy campers, either.

This week the department held such a hearing, as part of its accreditation process - and just one person, former mayoral candidate Trudy McFall, showed up.
That says a good deal about the improvement of city law enforcement under Chief Michael Pristoop.
The editors are making an assumption that the reaccreditation meeting a few years ago, there was a jam-packed hall. Uhh, guess again. Had the paper done its homework, rather than make an assumption, it would have found that the public accreditation hearing just three years ago, there was not a crowd of unhappy campers. There was one citizen present. I know.  I was that citizen.  I made a few statements both favorable and also raising some questions and the outside evaluation panel basically told me to take my concerns to the chief, which of course made me wonder why they held a public panel--and why I bothered to attend. The attendance of but one citizen activist, even one as dedicated and hardworking as Ms. McFall, tells us very little except that most citizens did not know, don't care or don't think the meeting is meaningful. Having said this, I still believe that Pristoop has been doing a very good job. And by the way, much of the credit for having become accredited a few years ago should go to retired Captain Barbara Hopkins who has also been a member of such evaluation teams in other cities.
