Bicyclists are regularly confronted with a host of dangers and safety issues, one of which is how to enforce existing laws. The Annapolis Police Department, under the leadership of Chief Michael Pristoop has taken an interest in protecting the rights of cyclists and thereby making the streets Annapolis a more bike-friendly place. Much still needs to be done, but enforcement and education when coupled with design and construction, are important cornerstones of making a truly bike-friendly city .
Bike patrol officers along with Department of Transportation employees hand out circulars to motorists and cyclists about respecting the laws and each other's rights. They participated in the recent Bike to Work Day which attracted over 250 cyclists and this weekend, a new effort gets underway highlighting cooperation between the city's only bike shop and the bike patrol officers.
On Saturday, June 12, 2010 from 2pm-8pm at Stan and Joe’s Saloon, 37 West Street in Annapolis, Capital Bicycle and Stan and Joe’s are joining forces in an effort to raise $10,000 to purchase new equipment for our bike patrol. This private effort is the business communities way of giving back to those who give so much. Please show your support. There will be live music and activities including a dunking booth featuring local celebrities and dignitaries, silent auction, food and much more. Don’t forget to bring a can of food to help out the Lighthouse Shelter. Donations from local businesses are needed for the silent auction and to raise funds. Please contact Tracy McGovern from Stan And Joe’s at 410 279 0070 or 410 263 1993. Contributors may make a general donation or buy a specific piece of equipment.
