Join ACP Publisher Paul Foer at The Oyster Festival in Shady Side on Sunday

Come on down to South County (or come on over or come on up or whatever) to enjoy The West River Heritage Day Oyster Festival at The Captain Salem Avery House and Museum. Yours truly, ACP Publisher Paul Foer will be on hand to give tours of the 2oth century history of the museum, formerly known as The National Masonic Fishing and Country Club and to sign copies of  "For Fishing, Family and Fun:Seven Decades of Communal Living by the Chesapeake Bay."

The Fishing Club was founded in the 1920's by a group made up primarily of Jewish Masons from Washington, DC including the sons of the famed labor leader and trade unionist Samuel Gompers, founder of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). One of the original members was Frank Foer, great uncle of ACP publisher Paul Foer, who was instrumental in ensuring that the property would be preserved by transferring it to The Shady Side Rural Heritage Society. Foer, who spent his summers at the old club,  wrote a chapter in the "For Fishing..." book that was published when he worked with the museum when it showcased an exhibit of the club's history.

The historic waterman’s home of Captain Avery and his family is circa 1859 and is a National Historic Landmark. It is owned and operated by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society that preserves, collects, documents and shares local history and culture. The Museum is an educational and community center for all to have fun together and to participate and share in activities that expand understanding of the social, cultural, economic, and environmental changes on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay.
