Mark Your Calendar for The "Bio-Blitz" at South River Headwaters

The Scenic Rivers Land Trust Second “Bio-Blitz” will take place on Saturday September 18th at noon –Sunday, September 19th til noon at the Bacon Ridge Branch Natural Area Crownsville, Maryland

Together, the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, South River Federation and Scenic Rivers Land Trust are co-hosting the second BioBlitz at the Bacon Ridge Natural Area in the South River Greenway in central Anne Arundel County. This natural area surrounds Bacon Ridge Branch, the headwaters of the South River and  contains extensive interior forest habitat, stream valleys, and recent and old beaver ponds. Upland streams, lily filled ponds, nesting birds and wild flowers
are just a few of sights to delight the senses of nature enthusiasts at this event. Hikes range from 1 to 4 miles on marked trials. This area is not yet open to the public.

The South River Greenway BioBlitz will occur over a 24-hourperiod where scientists of various disciplines will offer their expertise to gain a snapshot of the flora, fauna, and other taxa within the parkland. In addition to an information gathering opportunity, this BioBlitz will serve as an educational tool for volunteers, a promoter of scientific awareness, a networking opportunity for experts and staff, and a chance to have fun in the field. There will be six 4-hour sampling periods—select the time frames most appropriate for your schedule and taxon.

See Scenic Rivers Land Trust’s website http://www.srlt.org/woods/ or South River Federation’s website for more details and a sign-up sheet. Call SRLT office at 443–597–0063 for directions and additional details.

Thanks for spreading the word, Paul. This is a gorgeous forested stream valley that locals need to see and hike, they will love it. See how your Program Open Space dollars are being spent on acquiring parcels within the Greenway, and experience at what will be the largest park in the AA County park system. Thanks to County Exec. Leopold and former parks dir. Frank Marzucco for their vision to preserve these ecologically valuable lands before they are gobbled up. I'm a board member of Scenic Rivers Land Trust, and I invite you to come join us for the Bioblitz or other outing in the Greenway
