D DAY Remembered

This post is dedicated to the many millions of men and women who fought on the Allied side in World War 2. This is especially dedicated to:
Marvin Lebow who bombed German positions on the D-Day landing beaches from a Marauder
Technical Sgt. Irving Fine who was stationed in New Guinea at the time
Yeoman Melvin Foer a USN "Sea-Bee" who was stationed in Pearl Harbor in June, 1944
Ruben Tebeleff-USA Air Force Supply Officer for the famed P-38 "Lightning"
Robert Segal-USA Signal Corps-Europe a meteorologist
and Milton Segal,MD, USA Medical Corps
Joe Robbins, Headquarters Company, 29th Infantry Division who landed that morning with the first wave of soldiers on Omaha Beach and then fought and walked his way across Europe over the next year. Joe told me, "We lost sixty percent of the guys in my unit that first day. Sixty percent. Those guys in the Navy, the Air Force, they had good days. We never had a good day in the infantry."

My father, my uncles and a friend. All Americans, Jewish Americans who served their country and members of The Greatest Generation. Thank you.

In June, 1944, Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower had to make the agonizingly fateful decision of whether to launch the invasion when bad weather threatened, or wait until weeks later when the tides would again be appropriate for the invasion. If weather remained poor, the invasion would suffer. If they waited, the Germans would be better prepared and the Allies would have less summer time to advance. As it turned out, the weather cleared--just enough--and Ike said go--and they did. The rest is history. And now, the speech delivered by Ike to the invasion forces.

Order of the Day 6 June 1944 Supreme Allied Headquarters

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!
You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we
have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you.
The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere
march with you. In company with our brave Allies and
brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the
destruction of the German war
machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of
Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well
equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of
1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats,
in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their
strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home
Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions
of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men.
The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to
Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in
battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great
and noble undertaking.
