We have previously mentioned that Laurie Sears Deppa is the newest candidate for mayor. I have spoken with her and invited her to the July 28 Mayoral Debate and 100,000th blog hit celebration. From a lengthy and rambling voice mail message, it seems that with various issues in her personal life, she can't make the debate-but she was apologetic and assured me she'd attend other ones in August and September. I do not take this personally and I understand that friends and family comes first, but what if you are mayor? Do friends and family still always come first? She has been a Naval Officer so certainly she must understand why I ask this.
Because she must attend to those close to her, that is her priority and if it costs her the mayoral race, as she believes it may, then so be it. Indeed. Ms. Deppa I am sorry to hear of your personal problems but if anything is going to cost you the race, it sure ain't this. I can only guess that these personal issues won't be the only thing to blame, but it is a great leap of faith for you to assume that your candidacy is the one that has the most to lose because you are caring for the ill. I doubt you'd be up there in the polls at this late date unless maybe Obama came here and endorsed you. Seriously, what do you expect when you suddenly switch parties and enter a race with incumbents and where some of the candidates have been campaigning for a year or more? This is what happens when you are running for public office. It's not for everyone.
Gil Renaut is gearing up for tomorrow night's forum sponsored by the Housing Authority. At least he's gearing up to criticize some of his opponents. In an email he sent out on Monday, Renaut writes:
Cynthia Carter (formerly on the City Council) is now the vice-chair of the authority board, and she supports Zina Pierre, so it should be a lively event.
Gilbert Renaut for Mayor of Annapolis

By authority Richard F. Emmett, Treasurer"
CP's Note to Gil: You are criticizing the three most viable candidates. You are essentially conceding that they are the front-runners. What does that make you? Instead of criticizing them (Am I not doing a good enough job already?) why don't you tell us about your views about public housing? Why send an email and tell us to "come watch" because it will be a "lively event"?? I want to go to learn about the candidate's ideas about public housing and I think I can figure out if Josh Cohen has packed the room with his or her supporters thank you very much and whether or not Cynthia Carter is on the HACA board and also supports Zina Pierre is probably immaterial and the same for whether or not somebody will be annoyed at Trudy McFall which if true, we'll all witness anyhow.... Please--just tell us what your goals and plans are for improving or expanding or decreasing or changing or transforming or ending or doing whatever to public housing you think we should do and we can make up our own minds about whether to vote for you or another candidate. For a campaign whose theme is "unifying leadership" I find this kind of action rather.....interesting....The forum will begin at 6:30 pm at the Eastport Community Center on 1014 President Street tomorrow--that is Wednesday night the 22nd.
