WILL ABBAS AND OLMERT SET EXAMPLE FOR US LOCALLY?

By now we have all read media accounts about a planned US/Israeli/Palestinian summit at the Naval Academy in November. That's exciting and welcome, but CP cannot help but note the sad ironies. To wit, these once sworn enemies, seemingly locked in what was once but an intractable, fight-to-the-death syndrome of violence and escalation now talk and have meetings to ensure a mutually viable future. WHY CAN'T WE GET ALONG HERE? WHY CAN'T MAYOR MOYER AND COUNTY EXECUTIVE LEOPOLD GET TOGETHER? Why can't we have real regional planning and cooperation? Why can't the Mayor, the Housing Authority and The Police work more cooperatively on fighting crime? Why can't downtown residents and businesses find creative ways to make downtown great? And the list goes on, and on.......

It takes time and commitment and energy. Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting for a century. Perhaps they are tiring of it. A few courageous leaders have emerged to find new ways to lead their people. Progress has been made. On the other hand, CP cannot remember a time when The Mayor of Annapolis and County Executive meaningfully worked together. Does Ms. Moyer and Mr. Leopold need to go to Jerusalem, Geneva or The Hague, or New York to start this process?
